Donald Macdonald did lots of offshore fully crewed yacht racing when in the RAF, which included Fastnet’s and Rolex China Sea Race. After this he went to race dinghies, predominantly Lasers, until 3 years ago he bought a 30 year old yacht to go pottering in. Then Donald discovered SORC and did the RIOW (solo Round the Isle of Wight race) and nothing else. In 2016 and 2017 he competed in all the SORC offshore race series. The soloFASTNET with all the vagaries of weather, tides, headlands should hone the pottering skills a bit more.
